Video-Webinar on SONA (Structural Engineering: Outstanding and Novel Achievements)



The video-webinar on SONA or  "Structural Engineering: Outstanding & Novel Achievements" is a self-paced webinar where the participant may view the video presentations and lectures prepared by the organizers at his/her own pace/time/place. The video presentations and lectures are uploaded at the STRUCT-CHANNEL @ YouTube. The STRUCT-CHANNEL is a platform for sharing video presentations about structural engineering to advance the knowledge and understanding of civil engineering students, faculty and professionals about the relevance and importance of the structural engineering (STE) specialization in building the quality of life. The STRUCT-CHANNEL is an initiative of the Advocates of Structural Engineering Group (ASTEG), an informal group whose members are volunteer structural engineers from the Philippine Group of IABSE and/or ASEP.

IABSE-PH conducts MODES CPD at DLSU

The Philippine Group of IABSE co-organized with the Civil Engineering Department of De La Salle University and HIRUN  International Co. Ltd. the “Continuing Professional Development  Lecture for Civil Engineers on “MODIFYING EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE OF STRUCTURES USING ANTI-SEISMIC DEVICES” or MODES CPD on 22 February 2020 at De La Salle University, Manila, Philippines. IABSE members who served as resource speakers were Dr. Andres Winston Oreta (Overview on Seismic Retrofitting and Anti-seismic Devices), Engr. Reynaldo Flordeliza (Data Interpretation of Earthquake Recording Instrumentation from Real-Time Event on Instrumented Buildings) and Dr. Rodolfo Mendoza Jr. (Buckling-Restrained Braced (BRB) Design Concepts and Applications to Asset Enhancement). Dr. Agostino Marioni (HIRUN International Chair) presented about Base Isolators, Dampers and other kinds of Anti-Seismic Devices.

IABSE New York 2019

New York, USA - Last September 2-6, 2019, Civil Engineering Department Professor, Dr. Bernardo Lejano, presented his paper with the title "C-section Cold-Formed Steel as Structural Members in Housing Construction in the Philippines" in the 2019 IABSE (International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineer Congress) Congress New York. Other Philippine members who attended were Jani Cunanan and Asisclo Villafuerte


MODES CPD Lecture co-organized by the IABSE-PH Group

The Philippine Group of IABSE is co-organizing the MODES CPD Lecture with the Dept. of Civil Engineering, DLSU, Manila and HIRUN International on Feb. 22, 2020 at DLSU, Manila.

IABSE members, Dr. Andres Oreta, Engr. Rey Flordeliza and Dr. Rodolfo Mendoza, Jr. will be the resource speakers together with Dr. Agostino Marioni of HIRUN International.

Information Forum on “Outstanding Structures”

The Philippine Group of IABSE, in support to IABSE’s 90th Founding Anniversary, conducted an Information Forum on “Outstanding Structures: Learning lessons from IABSE OStrA awardees & finalists for the most remarkable, innovative, creative & stimulating structures." The forum featured IABSE’s OSTRA awardees and finalists with highlights on the innovations and significance of each bridge and building structure.
.
              The Department of Civil Engineering of De La Salle University supported the event. Organizing this event are IABSE-PH members from DLSU, Dr. Andy Oreta (IABSE-PH Chair), Dr. Jonathan Dungca (IABSE-PH Secretary), Cheryl Roxas and Erica Uy. The resource persons were IABSE members, Juanito Cunanan, Adam Abinales, Rey C.D. Singh, Wennie Oclarino and Asisclo Villafuerte. BBR Philippines and Abinales Associates Engineers & Consultants sponsored the event.

              About 40 participants including the organizers from the academe, consulting firms and government institutions attended the forum. The forum also was an opportunity to promote IABSE – benefits for members, IABSE publications and conferences in 2019 and 2020. It is hoped that through this event, the participants will register as members of IABSE and attend IABSE conferences and symposia.

IABSE-PH Forum on Outstanding Structures

The Philippine Group of IABSE and the Department of Civil Engineering, De La Salle University will hold an Information Forum on ÖUTSTANDING STRUCTURES" om May 4, 2019 at VH207, DLSU, Manila. The forum will highlight lessons on structural design  and construction of IABSE Outstanding Structures awardees and finalists. The IABSE Outstanding Structure Award (OStrA) was established in 1998. It is one of the highest distinctions awarded by IABSE and recognises, in different regions of the world, some of the most remarkable, innovative, creative, or otherwise stimulating structures. Sustainability and respect of the environment is also an important factor.

To present selected outstanding structures are Philippine Group members of IABSE:

  • Engr. Juanito Cunanan - to present outstanding bridges 
  • Engr. Adam Abinales - to present outstanding vertical structures
The forum will also promote IABSE, now that it celebrates its 90th year. Dr. Jonathan Dungca and Engr. Asisclo Villafuerte will share their experience and learnings as IABSE members and participant in one of the IABSE symposiums and conferences. Dr. Dungca attended IABSE-Stockholm in 2016 while Villafuerte attended IABSE-Vancouver, Canada in 2017. Dr. Oreta will present about IABSE - history and benefits.

IABSE Spring Conference - KL, Malaysia 2018

Members of the Philippine Group of IABSE attended the IABSE Spring Conference 2018 at Double Tree by Hilton, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on April 25-27, 2018. Dr. Andres Winston Oreta (DLSU professor), chair of the Philippine Group presented the paper co-authored with Nikko Villanueva and Maejan Cuartero entitled, "Strength Properties and Microscopic Observations of Concrete with Plastic Wastes as Partial Aggregate Substitute."  Engr. Kenneth Guevarra (MSCE student at DLSU) presented the paper with Dr. Jason Ongpeng (DLSU Assoc. Professor) and Prof. Sohichi Hirose (Tokyo Institute of Technology), "Air-Coupled Nonlinear Ultrasonic Test for RC Beams.


New IABSE member, Engr. Juanito Cunanan, Director of the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines also attended the conference.

At the conference, the Philippine members met Filipinos, Mr Chep Uytiepo (IABSE Executive Director based at Zurich), Ms. Sherryl Hammerli of IABSE Secretariat (Zurich) and Reignard Tan of Multiconsult (Norway).
